Immersive Storytelling that Goes Beyond Traditional Interpretation

Wednesday, December 3 at 12PM ET/5PM GMT/9AM PT

In this session, the presenters will share approaches for inviting community members from outside of the museum to help chronicle wider perspectives around museum collections and programming.

The Museum of Arts and Design (New York, NY, US) enlisted a team of producers and actors to create an "audio drama" to compliment an exhibition of “worldbuilding” work by artist Saya Woolfalk. Each stop of the audio tour furthered the visitor’s sonic immersion in a fictional narrative expanding on to the exhibition’s utopian themes. Together, the full tour became a comprehensive audio performance that added an engaging layer of interpretation—inviting visitors to develop a shared appreciation of the artist's investigations across a blend of global cultures.

To make its public art collection more accessible to a wider audience, the MIT List Visual Arts Center (Cambridge, MA, US) features a musical tour by world-renowned musician and resident professor Lupe Fiasco, who created a site-specific field recording project exploring the relationship between rap and the objects located across the university's 160-acre campus. Capturing ambient sounds and crafting lyrics in response to each piece, the project transforms public art into a living sonic experience—where rap and visual art intersect in real time.

Speakers

Alix Finkelstein, Director of Marketing and Visitor Services, Museum of Arts and Design (New York, NY, US)

Kristen Wawruck, Associate Director, MIT List Visual Arts Center (Cambridge, MA, US)
